OCS Uniform Requirements

Academic Training

OCS is designed to prepare you for becoming a commissioned officer by providing you with the basic knowledge of the naval profession and its related military, academic and nautical subjects. It will provide moral, mental and physical development, and instill the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty. You will receive specialized follow-on training after OCS to further prepare you for your initial fleet assignment. The training you will receive during your 12 weeks at OCS is divided into the following units of instruction:

  1. Programs and Policies: Subjects include suicide awareness and prevention, Fraternization, Hazing, Sexual Assault Prevention and Readiness (SAPR), Command Managed Equal Opportunity (CMEO), Operational Risk Management (ORM), Navy Knowledge Online (NKO), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), GI Bill, and the Fleet and Family Support Center.
  2. Sea Power: You will gain an overview of U. S. Naval history from the Revolutionary War to modern day. Special emphasis will be placed on major Navy wartime campaigns, the development of Navy technology and strategy, and joint warfare operations.
  3. Engineering & Weapons: You will be introduced to the fundamentals of naval propulsion plants, auxiliary systems, and electrical distribution. In addition, you will gain a basic understanding of naval radars, undersea sound propagation, Electronic Warfare, and weapons.
  4. Damage Control: The damage control curriculum is designed to familiarize you with fire-fighting and flooding controls through hands-on training. At the Fire-Fighting Trainer and Wet Trainer, you will have the opportunity to directly combat fires and flooding with the help of your damage control team.
  5. Naval Orientation and Warfare: You will be taught basic military rank structure, naval customs and courtesies, chain of command structure, components of naval strategy, naval doctrine and platforms, different warfare arenas, and the threats we currently face worldwide. In addition, you will learn different administrative aspects of being a naval officer, including records, advancement, classified information handling, career advancement, and pay.
  6. Leadership: You will be encouraged to develop your self-motivation, goals, officer like qualities, ethics, mentorship abilities, and decision making skills. There will be many opportunities through practical application to demonstrate your honed leadership skills.
  7. Naval Orientation and Seamanship (NOS): NOS familiarizes you with naval terminology, equipment, and deck operations. You will learn to use the maneuvering board, and how to put this knowledge to practical use underway.Academic Training
  8. Navigations: Navigation training consists of chart work, the study of Navigational Aids, and knowledge of the Rules of the Road. You will be required to read charts and plot simulated movements and positions of a ship at sea.
  9. Military Law: Subjects introduced include the Military Code of Conduct, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, investigations, Non-Judicial Punishment, Courts-Martial procedures, and administrative discharges.

Military Training

Military training at Officer Candidate School is comprised of the following categories:

Physical Training: There are four Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA) at OCS, the Initial Strength Test (IST), In-PFA, Mid-PFA and the Out-PFA. The passing requirements are Satisfactory Medium for IST, and Good for the Out-PFA. Click Here for specific requirements regarding the Navy’s Physical Readiness Program. You will not be allowed to begin training without a Satisfactory Medium on the IST or without passing the Body Composition Assessment (BCA).

Room & Locker Inspection (RLP): A candidate's room is subject to inspection anytime. To ensure cleanliness and maintain standards, room inspections occur at regular intervals in lieu of zone inspections. Rooms are to be maintained in accordance with the daily room standards.

Personnel Inspection (PI): Each candidate will be inspected for proper uniform, haircut, shave, knowledge, hygiene and general military appearance.

Drill: Approximately 40 hours are spent learning and practicing drill. Officer Candidates march to and from every evolution. In week 5 of training you will have a drill competition where you will be graded on your drill proficiency.Military Training

Graduation/Commissioning Ceremony: Your final exercise as an Officer Candidate is the Graduation/Commissioning Ceremony. Your ultimate goal at Officer Candidate School is a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy.

Attached is the OCS Inspection Knowledge. This is knowledge that is required to be memorized verbatim by all Candidates. Study these items prior to arrival at OCS. This information is required to be memorized verbatim and is inspectable beginning week 3.

Physical FITNESS Standards

Candidates must achieve an overall minimum score of "Satisfactory Medium" on the IST. Those who take the IST upon arrival at OCS and achieve a "Probationary" score will be placed in Holding Company (H Company) for three weeks in order to improve their physical fitness. If, at the end of three weeks, a Candidate is unable to take and pass a second IST attempt, the Candidate may be disenrolled from OCS by the Commanding Officer.

In the first three days of training candidates will undergo a Body Composition Analysis (BCA). Should a candidate be found to exceed the allowable limit they will be removed from their class and placed in Holding Company for three weeks to improve. If by that time they are not found in standards they will be subject to disenrollment.

In the first week of training students will be required to pass a Navy PFA with a minimum passing score of satisfactory. PFA consists of maximum curl-ups (2 mins), push ups (2 mins), and a 1.5 mile run. Candidates that fail the initial PFA will be removed from their class and placed in Holding Company for three weeks to improve their physical conditioning. If still unable to pass after three weeks they will be subject to disenrollment. It is imperative that you arrive in the best possible physical shape, ready and able to participate in a demanding physical fitness program. To help ensure success, be sure to bring a newer pair of quality running shoes.

The Navy considers a physically fit body as important as a sound mind. The objectives of the physical training classes at Officer Training Command are to develop stamina, endurance and to improve your overall physical condition so you can meet demanding physical fitness requirements.

Physical training instruction begins immediately upon arrival. You are required to be within Navy body fat standards upon arrival.  They are:

Male Standards by age:
18-21: 22%
22-29: 23%
30-39: 24%
40+: 26%

Female Standards by age:
18-21: 33%
22-29: 34%
30-39: 35%
40+ 36%

Within the first two days of training, you will be weighed and measured, and will run a Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA). It pays to be in peak physical condition when you report to OTC.

If you are unable to pass this you will be held at Officer Training Command for an additional three weeks to undergo further remediation.

You should report in your best possible physical condition. The better shape you’re in, the less susceptible you’ll be to injury. It is highly recommended that you prepare yourself well ahead of time. The following link contains recommended conditioning programs to help prepare you for the physical fitness requirements of OTC.

The Physical Fitness Assessment consists of 4 events:

  • Height, weight and body composition analysis
  • Curl-ups
  • Push-ups
  • 1.5 mile run

Those individuals not satisfactorily completing any portion of the PFA will encounter administrative actions that may adversely affect their status at Officer Training Command and the program in which they are currently in.

Initial Physical Readiness Qualifications (required to graduate) consists of:

FOR OCS CANDIDATES ONLY:

During your first week of training you will commence a regimen of daily physical training.  You must be able to perform aerobic activity, muscular strength exercises and endurance exercises.  Aerobic activity will include running approximately 3  miles three or four times per week, primarily on track or road surfaces.  The level of strength and stamina necessary to successfully complete Officer Candidate School (OCS) is similar to the level required in cross-training fitness programs as seen on infomercials.  You will benefit greatly if you report to OCS in good physical condition.

On your second day of training you will be required to pass each portion of the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) with a score of Satisfactory Medium. By the 9th week you will be required to pass each portion of the PFA with a score of Good Low.

Officer Candidates who fail to score this will be placed in the Holding Company for physical fitness remediation.  The candidate will remain in Holding Company until he/she is able to pass the PFA with the required score.  This could extend your stay at OCS for an indefinite amount of time.

Morning physical training (PT) will consist of running 4 days a week, and strength and conditioning 2 days a week.
