About the Command….

StaffAs a new staff Member, you are beginning a rewarding and challenging assignment.  The command is diverse in the fact we have officers assigned from every Corps and specialty.  We have restricted and unrestricted line, to include Surface Warfare, Aviation (Pilot), Submarine Warfare (Nuclear), Supply, Medical Service Corps, Nurse Corps, Limited Duty Officers, Chief Warrant Officers, Human Resource Officers along with our Marine Corp Counterparts.  Our enlisted community also is very diverse, as we have Sailors and Marines from specialties from all aspects of the Navy/Marine Corps Team.

OCS Training

We provide training to 5 separate schoolhouses, which include Officer Candidate School(OCS), Officer Development School (ODS), Mustang University (LDO/CWO), Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course (DCOIC) and the Naval Sciences Institute (STA-21).  We train over 1500 students/candidates each year, and are the largest officer’s accession training command in the military.  The Fleet depends on us to provide them with the competent, well trained and morally and physically strong Officers.

As a new staff member, you will provide a myriad of tasks which include basic instruction, mentorship and personal guidance.  This will come in the form of a Class Officer/Class Chief Petty Officer/Class Drill Instructor/Academics instructor or Support Staff.

Each role is vital in the overall success of the command mission.  Below is a brief description of each position:

StaffClass Officer’s oversee every aspect of class development and is responsible for the safety, training, discipline, integrity, conduct and general performance of assigned students from the reporting date to graduation and commissioning.  The Class Officer’s role and involvement is constant, but becomes most critical in the later part of “applied leadership” training.

Class Chief Petty Officers are detailed as Recruit Division Commander (RDC) qualified (9508 NEC) and are entitled to Special Duty Assignment Pay (SDAP), if assigned to a 9508 NEC billet per EDVR.  They function as senior enlisted technical experts and are responsible for the training, administration, good order and discipline and general welfare of assigned students throughout all phases of training.

InstructorsClass Drill Instructors are assigned to Officer Candidate School to indoctrinate candidates in basic military procedures including ceremonial drill and physical fitness, and adapt the class to the military lifestyle and intense environment expected during fleet assignment.

Academics Instructors are assigned to the Academics Department and are responsible for delivering all instruction to every school house at Officer Training Command.  These include subjects such as: Navigation, Seamanship, Pay and Allowances, Naval Warfare, Engineering, Military Indoctrination, Damage Control, Division Officer Leadership Course and much more.  They use their leadership experience to bring real life experience to the material so students get first hand knowledge of how it is applied in the fleet.

Support Staff.  Along with our outstanding civilian staff, we have military members who augment our support staff.  These positions include Personal and Administrative Services, Facilities and Information Systems Department, Training and Readiness and our Special Assistants.
